Often yes. AVR generations change incrementally, and a one-generation-old model at a real discount is frequently the best value in the whole lineup.
Why this works: the parts of a receiver that make the biggest difference to sound (amplifier section, power supply, DAC and room-correction implementation) tend to carry over from year to year with small revisions. What changes between generations is usually connectivity and features: a newer HDMI standard, an extra streaming service, a refined menu. Useful, sometimes essential, but not sound quality per se.
So the checklist is short. First: HDMI capabilities. Does the older model support what your display and sources actually need? If you have or plan a console or a 4K 120 Hz display, check the HDMI bandwidth and the number of inputs at that bandwidth. If your sources are a streaming box and a TV with eARC, the older generation is very likely fine. Second: the streaming and room-correction features you care about. If a particular platform or a particular correction tier matters to you, confirm the older model has it. Third, and critically in India: is it fresh authorised stock with full warranty, or aged or grey inventory being quietly cleared? A discount on a unit imported by the wrong channel is not a discount; it is the same risk in a cheaper wrapper.
How to compare: put the two generations side by side on the manufacturer's own spec pages, not a reseller's summary. Look for the differences, then ask whether any of them touch how you will actually use the receiver. If none do, take the savings and put them into the speakers, where they will be audible.
Where the rule stops mattering: when the new generation brings a feature you specifically need (an HDMI standard for a new console is the common case), or when the "discount" is small enough that future-proofing is nearly free. In those cases pay for the current model.
Where I would be careful: capacitors and power supplies do not mind sitting in a warehouse for a year, but warranty clocks sometimes do. Confirm the warranty starts from your invoice date, as per brand or distributor policy.
