They are the room-correction systems built into AVRs, they help, and in most homes they are left half-used. That last part is the problem.
What they do: play test tones through each speaker, record them with a supplied mic at one or more positions, and from that set speaker distances, channel levels, speaker sizes and crossovers, then apply an EQ curve to flatten the frequency response your seats hear. Audyssey, Dirac Live and YPAO differ in how many measurement points they use, how much of the correction is fixed versus adjustable, and how well they handle the time domain, but the job is the same. Dirac in particular is a strong tool when driven properly.
What they cannot do: change your speakers' off-axis behaviour, remove reflections from a glass wall, or make a subwoofer in the wrong corner behave like one in the right place. EQ works well on bass modes at the measured seats and can trim tonal balance above that. It cannot rewrite the room.
Are they enough? Out of the box, usually not, and it is rarely the software's fault. The pattern we see: mic held by hand or set at one lazy position, defaults accepted, crossovers set too low because the mic caught a lucky room mode, sub level and phase never checked, and "full-band" left on speakers that have no business running full-band. The routine ran, a tick appeared on screen, and the system has sounded slightly wrong ever since. Software cannot compensate for a mic on the sofa cushion.
Out-of-the-box auto-cal versus a properly conducted, verified calibration is not a subtle difference. That gap is exactly why we offer calibration as a paid, structured service at three levels rather than as a checkbox at delivery: the same tools, used carefully, checked by hand, and at the higher levels confirmed with independent measurement.
