Room & calibration

How much does my room affect the sound, really?

More than any single component. If I had to rank what shapes the sound you hear, the room comes first and the speakers second, with the electronics some way behind.

The mechanism is simple. Your speakers produce a signal; the room then reflects it, absorbs it and stores it. Walls send early reflections that smear imaging and blur dialogue. Room modes, set by the room's dimensions, pile bass up at some frequencies and cancel it at others, so the same track has boom at one seat and a hole at the next. Hard surfaces let everything ring on for longer than the recording intended. The result at your ears is the speaker's output plus the room's edits, and the room's edits are large.

Put the same system in a 10 by 12 foot bedroom, a marble-floored hall with a glass front, and a carpeted theatre room, and you will hear three different systems. Indian living rooms tend to be the harshest of the three: tile or marble underfoot, glass on one side, an open kitchen on the other, and very little that absorbs. That is a room built for cleaning, not for listening.

Which is why a well-chosen 1.5 lakh system set up for its room routinely embarrasses a 3 lakh system dropped into a hostile one. Equipment cannot outspend acoustics. It can only be placed and corrected within them.

The good news is that the room is also the cheapest upgrade. Speaker placement, seating position (not hard against the back wall), a thick rug between the speakers and the sofa, heavier curtains, a bookshelf on a bare wall. None of that costs what a component costs, and all of it changes what you hear.

After the free steps, measurement-based calibration corrects what the room does at your seats, and acoustic treatment addresses what calibration cannot. Both are conversations for after the layout is right.
