Laser vs lamp projector — which should I buy?

For a projector you will keep long-term or use heavily, laser usually wins on total cost. For lighter use on a tight budget, the lamp model's upfront saving is real. Pick the column you belong in first.

What laser buys you: a long rated life (manufacturers quote tens of thousands of hours, and the number varies by model, so read the spec page for the one you are considering), instant on and off, and brightness that stays stable across those hours instead of fading gradually toward a lamp change. That last point is the one people underrate. A lamp does not fail on a schedule; it dims for a year first, and you adjust to the dimmer picture without noticing until a new lamp shocks you.

What lamp buys you: a lower purchase price and, in many cases, an excellent picture. Nothing about lamp illumination is inferior on day one. The cost sits in the future: replacement lamps every few thousand hours, and in India that also means depending on a specific lamp still being available years from now. I have seen very good projectors retired because the lamp part became unobtainable, which is a sad way for a picture to end.

The comparison, then, is not "which technology is better" but "how many hours will you put on it, and over how many years." Heavy use, or a dedicated room where the projector is the television, and the lamp cost and downtime add up fast enough that laser pays for itself. Occasional weekend films on a modest budget, and the lamp model's saving may never be clawed back before you upgrade for other reasons.

One thing not to do: buy on the rated hours alone. Compare rated life, yes, but also brightness, contrast and lens range for your room, because a laser projector that cannot fill your screen from your mounting position is a very long-lived mistake.
