REW is measurement software used with a calibrated microphone to see exactly what your room does to the sound, and measurement-based calibration is worth paying for when the system is worth hearing correctly.
What it shows: where bass peaks and where it collapses at each seat, how long each frequency rings on after the note stops (decay), and whether the sub and main speakers are arriving in phase at the crossover or partly cancelling each other. That is information no ear can supply reliably and no AVR auto routine displays. It replaces "the bass sounds a bit off" with a graph that says a 12 dB peak at 45 Hz and a null at 70 Hz at the second seat.
What we do with it: place the sub where the measurements say it should go, or find the best achievable position when the ideal one is domestically impossible; set crossovers where your speakers and room actually need them rather than where a default landed; adjust sub level, phase and delay so it integrates instead of sitting on top; and then verify the result at your seats with a second measurement. Before and after, on the same graph.
When is it worth paying for? Dedicated theatres, serious music rigs, anything with dual subs (which nearly always need measurement to work as a pair), and any system that has never sounded quite right where nobody can say why. Also whenever the equipment costs enough that guessing is the expensive option.
When is it not needed? A soundbar. A modest 5.1 in a small bedroom at low volume. There, a careful auto run and hand-checked crossovers get most of the way, and I would say so.
The distinction is "here are before-and-after measurements of your room" versus "we adjusted some settings". Measurement-based work is part of our paid calibration tiers.
