Home Theater Setups Beyond the Dedicated Room

What's more, home theater setups in India are no longer confined to dedicated cinema rooms. Modern technology and increase in demand gave rise to a new range of high-fidelity audio and video products that can transform any living room into a cinematic paradise. Slim on-wall speakers, invisible speakers, in-wall speakers, ceiling LCR speakers, ultra-short-throw projectors, and projector lifts for long-throw projectors are just a few examples of the innovative solutions that have made home theater setups more accessible and versatile.

Now quickly coming to the main subject of this post i.e. costing of a home theater setup.

How Much Does it Cost to Setup a Home Theater?

A Dolby Atmos or 5.1.2 home theater setup can cost as low as INR 1.5 Lacs and there's literally no upper limit to it. That sounds lame of course you are expecting lot more details than this, haha! I will cost in detail I would like to brief you about the different elements of a home theater. I will divide them into two parts - 'Essential' and 'Value Added'.

Essential Components: Breaking Down the Core Components of a Home Theater System

1. AV Receiver:

The AV receiver acts like a C.P.U (The Computer CPU) for your home theater system. Just like in a computer where all the input devices e.g. Keyboard, Mouse, Webcam, Microphone etc. and output devices e.g. Monitor, Speakers, Headphones etc. are all connected to the CPU similarly in case of a home theater setup all input devices e.g. Streaming Devices (Apple TV Box, or Firestick), Media Players, Blu Ray Players and Gaming Consoles etc. and output devices e.g. speakers, subwoofers and projector etc. are connected to the AV receiver.

The AV receiver is responsible for receiving the audio and video signals from the respective input devices, processing those signals properly, and sending them to the respective output devices e.g. speakers (In case of audio signals) and projector or TV (In case of video signal). There are different types of AV receivers e.g. 5.1, 5.2, 7.2, 9.2, 9.4, 11.2, 11.4 and finally 13.2 Channel. A 5.2 AV receiver can connect up to 5 speakers and 2 subwoofers, a 9.4 can connect up to 9 speakers and 4 subwoofers, it's as simple as that. Soon we will write a post on how to Setup an AV receiver.

A Quick Note: For a true Dolby Atmos home theater setup you will require a minimum 7.2 channel AV receiver. NONE of the 5 Channel AV receivers OR can process Dolby Atmos. While some of you would argue that the Pioneer VSX-534 offers Dolby Atmos being a 5 Channel AVR then you must note that it's Dolby Atmos Virtualization, a gimmick. Although I love other models of Pioneer.

Cost of AV Receivers

2. Speakers:

After the AV receiver speakers are the 2nd most important part of the home theater setup. They are essential for audio immersion in your home theater. The key speaker components include:

  • Left & Right Speakers: These handle the main audio channels, including dialogue and sound effects.
  • Center Channel Speaker: Responsible for clear dialogue and center-focused audio.
  • Surround Speakers: Create the ambiance and spatial sound in the room.
  • Subwoofer: Delivers deep bass frequencies, adding depth to audio.
  • Atmos Speakers: These speakers create a three-dimensional sound experience, immersing you with audio from above your head, making it essential for Dolby Atmos.

Projectors:

The projector is a crucial component of your home theater system. It's responsible for the large display which completes the cinematic experience at home. There are multiple types of projectors available in the market. You will need to consider factors like resolution, technology type, and light source type when choosing a projector. Common projector types include:

  1. Full HD Projectors: These projectors offer a resolution of 1920x1080 pixels, providing excellent image quality for HD content. They are available in both lamp and laser options. A Full HD lamp based projector starts from as low as 85,000/- whereas a Full HD laser starts from 1,75,000/-

Check price range of Full HD Projectors

  2. 4K Compatible Projectors: These projectors can accept a 4K signal as input but typically display it in a downscale format, often at a Full HD resolution. This downscale still offers advantages over regular Full HD projectors, providing improved color reproduction, sharpness, and detail. They are available with various technologies, including DLP and 3LCD, and different light source options. A 4K compatible lamp based projector starts from about 1 lac whereas a laser based can cost about 1,75,000/- Lacs.

  3. 4K UHD Projectors: These projectors have a native resolution of 3840x2160 pixels, offering true 4K Ultra HD image quality. They are available with various technologies, including DLP and 3LCD, and different light source options. A 4K UHD lamp based projector starts from 2 Lacs and a laser based starts from 4 Lacs.

Check price range of 4K Projectors

  4. Native 4K Projectors: Native 4K projectors have a true 4K resolution of 4096x2160 pixels, providing the highest level of detail and clarity. They are available with technologies like DLP and 3LCD but only with laser light source. The cost of a native 4K projector starts from about 5,50,000/-

Light source types include traditional lamps, laser, and LED. Lamp-based projectors are common and offer good image quality, while laser and LED projectors provide longer-lasting and more energy-efficient performance.

In a living room setup, the use of an ultra short throw projector is particularly helpful. When combined with an ultra short throw Ambient Light Rejecting (ALR) projection screen, this setup can maintain an amazing projection even in the presence of ambient light. The ALR screen enhances image quality by rejecting ambient light, allowing you to enjoy vibrant colors and sharp images even when there's some light in the room. A laser Ultra Short Throw (also known as Laser TV) projector starts from 3,50,000/-

Projection Screen:

While many projectors can produce a decent video output on bare white walls but I still want to include projection screens in the list of essential components as they significantly enhances the projection quality and gives a proper impression of the whole setup and last but not the least is that it does not cost a fortune. Therefore, I am mentioning the projection screens as an essential component. The projection screen provides a reflective surface for the projector to display images. Screens come in various types, including fixed-frame, retractable, and motorized options. The choice of screen size and material can greatly impact the viewing experience.

Fixed Frame Screens - The cost of a good quality fixed frame screen starts from just 15000 to up to more than 1 Lac depending upon the size and fabric type. Check the prices for fixed frame projection screens.

Streaming Players:

Streaming players, such as Apple TV, Roku, or Amazon Fire TV, allow you to access and stream content from online platforms like Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, and Disney+. These devices connect to the internet and your AV receiver to provide seamless streaming. My personal favorite streaming device to enjoy the OTTs is the Apple TV box. The reason behind that is its superior audio and video output and the fact that only Apple Music can offer Dolby Atmos music.

Acoustic Treatment of Speaker's Reflection Points

While most of the people just neglect it when planning a setup in a living room, the importance of acoustic treatment of speaker's reflection point is imperative. The treatment of sound is basically divided into three parts which are mention below -

1. Absorption panels to absorb the reflections of LCR speakers at the reflection points.

2. Diffusion panels to provide diffusion at the reflection points of surround speakers

3. Bass Traps to trap with subwoofer's reflection points.

The total budget of treatment for 5.1.2 setup should be within 25000-40000 when products of a reputed brand is used.

I understand that just sharing the links for prices of each essential equipment is not enough, therefore I am also putting down screenshots of sample quotations including cost of audio and video with multiple brands and different room sizes.

Value Added Components: Towards the Ultimate Home Cinema Experience

Pre-Processor and Amplifier:

In higher-end dedicated home theater rooms, a combination of a pre-processor and amplifier is used to achieve exceptional audio quality and control. Pre-processors offer advanced audio processing, while dedicated amplifiers ensure optimal power delivery to the speakers, resulting in a superior audio experience. An 11 channel pre-processor costs around 3 lacs and for amplification one can use combination of 3 Ch., 5 Ch. and 7 Ch. power amps of can go to the 11 Ch. power amp straight.

Automation systems can simplify the control and operation of your home theater. These systems often include remote controls, universal remotes, smartphone apps, or voice control to manage various components seamlessly. They can also enable features like lighting control and motorized screens or curtains for a complete cinematic experience.

Furniture and Seating: Explore options for comfortable and stylish home theater furniture and seating arrangements available in the Indian market.

  • Motorized Recliners:
    • Motorized recliners are a popular choice for home theaters. They come with multiple motors that control different parts of the recliner individually, allowing you to find the perfect seating position.
    • These recliners are available in various fabric options, synthetic leather, and genuine leather, providing a range of choices to match your interior design.
    • Accessories for motorized recliners include regular cupholders, pop-up cup holders, chillers, chargers, wireless chargers, trays, and storage compartments. These accessories add convenience and functionality to your seating.

Installation and Setup: Provide tips and guidance on installing and calibrating the equipment for the best audio and visual performance.

    1. Proper Speaker Placement:
    • Follow Dolby's guidelines for speaker placement based on your specific configuration, whether it's 5.1, 5.1.2, 7.1.2, 7.2.4, or others. Place the speakers as follows:
      • Front Left, Front Right, and Center: These should form an equilateral triangle with the viewer, with the center speaker at ear level.
      • Surround Speakers: Position these slightly behind and to the sides of the listening area.
      • Dolby Atmos Speakers: Install them above head level for an immersive overhead sound experience.
      • Subwoofer: Experiment with subwoofer placement for the best bass response, but it's often placed near a corner or against a wall.
    1. Proper Projector Positioning:
    • Position the projector at the proper projection distance to minimize keystone correction and digital zoom. Ideally, the projector should be centered with the screen for a symmetrical image. Use a ceiling mount or a secure projector stand to ensure stability.
    1. Screen Size and Viewing Distance:
    • Determine the ideal screen size based on your available viewing distance. The screen should be large enough to fill your field of vision without causing discomfort. Consider factors like aspect ratio and screen gain for the best visual experience.
    1. Audio Calibration:
    • For audio calibration, invest in a quality measurement microphone for room correction software. Most AV receivers come with their own calibration software (e.g., Audyssey, Dirac Live, Anthem Room Correction). Follow these steps:
      • Place the microphone at the primary listening position at ear level.
      • Run the room correction software, which will measure speaker distances, levels, and acoustics.
      • Make manual adjustments if needed after the automated calibration. Listen to test tones and adjust settings for a balanced sound.
    1. Video Calibration:
    • Calibrating your projector is essential for accurate color reproduction and image quality. You can consider professional calibration services, but if you prefer a DIY approach:
      • Use test patterns and calibration discs to adjust brightness, contrast, color, and sharpness.
      • Ensure the projector's color temperature matches the industry standard (usually around 6500K).
      • Adjust gamma settings for optimal black levels and shadow detail.
      • Fine-tune color settings for accurate and vibrant images.
      • Consider using calibration equipment like colorimeters for precise adjustments.
    1. Cable Management:
    • Ensure that all cables are neatly organized and secured. Use cable clips, Velcro straps, or cable conduits to prevent tangling and damage. Proper cable management not only enhances aesthetics but also prevents signal interference.
    1. Acoustic Treatment:
    • Consider acoustic treatments such as absorptive panels, diffusers, and bass traps to improve sound quality. These treatments can help reduce echoes and enhance audio clarity.
    1. Lighting Control:
    • Install dimmable lights and smart lighting controls. These allow you to create a suitable ambiance for movie viewing. Ensure that any lighting sources do not cause screen glare.
    1. Seating Arrangement:
    • Position your seating to ensure an unobstructed view of the screen from all angles. Motorized recliners or loungers can add a touch of luxury to your theater.
    1. Ventilation and Cooling:
    • Ensure that your home theater room has proper ventilation and cooling systems to prevent overheating of equipment like the projector, AV receiver, and amplifiers.
    1. Testing and Fine-Tuning:
    • After the initial setup, thoroughly test the audio and video performance with different content types. Make any necessary adjustments to speaker levels, image settings, and seating positions to achieve the best results.

By following these guidelines and paying attention to detail during the installation and calibration process, you can create a home theater that delivers outstanding audio and visual performance, allowing you to fully immerse yourself in your favorite movies and entertainment.
