Designed and engineered in JBL's world-famous acoustic engineering facility in Northridge, California, the HDI-1200P is the foundation of a complete surround system. It features a powerful 12-inch (300mm) Poly-plas(tm) cone woofer driven by a 1,000W amplifier to deliver maximum dynamics and incredibly accurate sound reproduction.
The driver in the HDI-1200P takes advantage of the core JBL transducer DNA found in all of the HDI Series subwoofers, delivering powerful dynamics with reduced distortion and a wide frequency response range. The driver is based on a cast-aluminum chassis that supports a large Symmetrical Field design ceramic motor structure with a vented pole using flared exits. The motor assembly is backed by a 3-inch long-throw voice coil to drive the high-density Poly-plas(tm) cone. The entire assembly has been optimized by Klippel and FEA to extract maximum performance in the system.

High-performance acoustic technologies combine with a contemporary aesthetic in the HDI-1200P to deliver a premium surround sound system that is the epitome of modern design. The sophisticated curved cabinet is heavily braced to provide a solid acoustic foundation and incorporates a bass reflex design with dual down-firing computer-optimized flared ports. The sleek enclosure is finished in a choice of automotive-grade painted High Gloss Black, or furniture-grade satin Walnut or Gray Oak wood veneers with black cloth, and magnetically attached grilles for an elegant appearance.
Adding to the visceral realism of modern movies and music, the JBL HDI-1200P delivers full bass depths that bring to life the sound mix and aural environment of any cinematic experience. Its deep-throated roar evoked a sense of fear and power in 'The Empty Man,' while the subwoofer's ability to reproduce oversized monsters stomping and eating their way through a city was also an essential component in delivering a fully immersive experience of 'Rampage' on my home theater system.
In addition to its powerful dynamic abilities, the HDI-1200P is equipped with a variable Low-pass filter and limiter that protects the amplifier from overdriving artifacts, providing accurate transient response and maintaining optimal performance under less-than-ideal conditions. The limiter is a particularly effective tool for ensuring that the low-frequency components in any movie don't become overly saturated or over-extended during loud climactic scenes.
A huge motor section that is designed with what JBL calls a "Symmetrical Field" helps to control stray magnetic flux that may be present in the room. The motor has a very long-throw voice coil that will allow the driver to move with a great deal of precision, and the cone itself is a hefty one that is supposed to flex a lot but isn't going to be overloaded or stressed.
The massive driver magnet is also a big one and should give the subwoofer a lot of control. The motor is backed by a very stiff suspension of Conex for the spider and nitrile-butyl rubber for the surround that is computer optimized for linear travel both outward and inward.
