Troubleshooting: HDMI & videoI connected my AVR between my source and TV and now the picture blinks or won't appear. Why?
That is an HDMI handshake failure: the copy-protection (HDCP) and format negotiation between source, AVR and TV is not completing, so the picture blinks, drops or never arrives. Common, fixable, and almost never a sign that anything is broken.
The order I work in:
Power-cycle everything, properly. Not standby: unplug source, AVR and TV from the mains for a full minute, then power on in order, TV first, then AVR, then the source. HDMI devices remember a failed negotiation stubbornly, and this clears it. It solves a surprising share of cases on its own, which is why every helpline asks first and every customer is slightly offended.
Swap in a certified high-speed HDMI cable. This is the single biggest cause, especially on longer runs. A cable that carried 1080p happily can fail the moment 4K or HDR arrives, and the failure looks exactly like this: blinking, black screen, sparkles.
Confirm the port supports the signal. On many AVRs and TVs only some inputs are full-bandwidth; the rest are older-spec ports kept for legacy gear. The manual says which. Plugging a 4K HDR source into a limited port produces a handshake that never resolves.
Set the source's resolution and format manually instead of leaving it on auto. Auto negotiation asks the chain "what can you all do?" and sometimes gets a confused answer. Fixing the source at what your TV supports removes the argument.
Update firmware on all three. HDMI compatibility fixes are the most common item in AVR and TV updates, and a two-year-old firmware on one box can be the odd one out.
One special case. If the run to the TV or projector is long and in-wall, that cable itself is the suspect, however expensive it was when it went in. Passive copper HDMI gets marginal well before the lengths projector installs need, and active or fibre HDMI exists for exactly this. We have replaced more "premium" long copper runs than I care to count.
