How do I choose an AV receiver for my room?

Room first, speakers second, sources last. Work backwards from the sofa, not forwards from the spec sheet, and the right receiver usually turns out to be one step below the one tempting you.

The room decides how many channels you can actually place. Not how many the receiver can drive; how many have a sensible physical home. An open-plan Indian living room with a glass wall on one side and the kitchen on the other often has room for a proper front three, a subwoofer and two surrounds, and nowhere at all for rear surrounds. Buying an 11-channel receiver for that room means paying for amplifiers that never see a speaker. Ceiling heights, if the ceiling allows them, are a better use of extra channels than rear surrounds you cannot place.

The speakers decide how much the amplifier section matters. High-sensitivity speakers at a three-metre listening distance need very little power; a mid-range AVR has headroom to spare. Low-sensitivity, low-impedance speakers in a large room are the case where the amplifier section starts to matter, and where pre-outs for a future power amp become a real feature rather than a bullet point.

The sources decide the connectivity: how many HDMI inputs, whether you need the newer HDMI bandwidth for a console or a 4K 120 Hz display, whether eARC from the TV is your main path, whether streaming built into the receiver matters or your TV already does that job.

Now the part I would underline. Speakers shape the sound far more than the electronics driving them. Two receivers a step apart sound close to identical into the same speakers in the same room; two speaker pairs a step apart do not. So the money saved by choosing the sensible receiver goes into the front three, and that is audible every evening.

What separates a good AVR choice from a mediocre one is not the model, it is whether the room-correction routine gets checked by hand afterwards. That is a separate conversation, and often the more important one.
