One budget, two rooms — a family home theatre and a separate music room. How should I split the money?

Asked by a buyer planning two rooms.

Do not make both rooms mediocre. If the budget strains, complete one properly and stage the other, and I would usually complete the theatre first because it eats more money in speaker count.

We build this pairing regularly. A recent design paired a 9.4-channel theatre in the main room with a dedicated stereo zone elsewhere: integrated amplifier, streamer and one serious pair of bookshelves. A second option trimmed the stereo tier to bring the total down without touching the theatre. Every version taught the same lessons.

First, the music room is cheaper to do well than people expect. Two channels, one amplifier, one source, one excellent pair of speakers. There is nowhere to hide and nowhere the money leaks; a good stereo pair on a competent integrated amp in a small room can be a joy at a fraction of the theatre's cost.

Second, the theatre spends money in multiplication. Every extra channel is a speaker, a cable run and an amplifier channel, and the subwoofers alone can equal the whole music room. So a 60/40 split toward the theatre is a common landing point, and it drifts toward 70/30 when the theatre room is large or the seating is far back and SPL demands rise.

Third, share nothing between rooms except taste. A "shared" AVR feeding a music zone through Zone 2 gives the music room the AVR's leftovers, and the routing limits bite exactly when you want to play something the AVR will not send there. Separate electronics per room is more expensive on paper and cheaper in frustration.

Fourth, wire both rooms during the same civil work even if one waits a year for equipment. Conduit and cable are cheap while the walls are open and absurdly expensive after paint. The music room can hold empty terminals for a year; it cannot hold a chisel.
