One subwoofer or two?

Two smaller subs beat one big one, and the reason is evenness, not volume.

Every room has spots where bass piles up and spots where it cancels. These are room modes, set by the room's dimensions, and they do not care which sub you bought. A single sub, however good, excites those modes from one point, so one seat gets tight bass, the next seat gets a hole at 60 Hz, and the third gets boom. A second sub placed elsewhere in the room fills in the first one's dips and tames some of its peaks. The result is that the whole sofa hears similar bass instead of one lucky chair. Measurable at every seat? Yes. Audible? Ask whoever sits at the end of the sofa.

So when is one enough? One prime seat, a listener who mostly sits alone, and a room that lets you place the sub where it belongs. A single well-placed sub can be dialled in beautifully for that seat, and I would not push a second on you.

When are duals the right answer? A family across a wide sofa, a large or open-plan room, marble and glass surfaces that make modes worse, or a room where the one good sub position is domestically impossible. Two subs give you more positions to work with, and that flexibility usually matters more than the extra output.

One caveat: two subs badly placed and never calibrated are just two problems. Dual subs need distance and level set for each, and ideally a measurement to confirm the pair is helping. This is exactly what the measurement-based level of our paid calibration is for.

The practical path I suggest to most people is to buy one good sub now, from a model you can buy a twin of later, and place it properly meanwhile. Placement costs nothing and changes the result more than the model does. Then add the second when budget allows. Send us a rough floor plan with the sofa marked and I will tell you whether your room is a one-sub room or a two-sub room.
