Projector or big-screen TV for home cinema in India?

Different tools for different rooms. In a bright Indian living room with mixed daytime use, a large TV is usually the right recommendation; in a room where you can control the light, a projector delivers a scale nothing else replicates.

What the TV wins: brightness, HDR punch, daytime viewing, and zero maintenance. A modern TV holds contrast with the curtains open and the tube lights on, and it will still be doing so in eight years without a lamp change or a filter clean. If the screen is the family's everything-screen, news at breakfast, cricket in the afternoon, cartoons at five, that resilience is worth more than any spec.

What the projector wins: sheer size and the cinema feeling. At 120 inches, at a proper seating distance, you are not watching a screen, you are at the movies. HDR on a projector is more modest than on a TV, but the size does something to your involvement that a 65-inch panel cannot, and the difference grows in a dark room with the sound to match.

Three questions decide it. First, can you control light? Not just at night: any stray daylight or a lit lamp lifts the black level and washes the picture out. Second, do you have the throw distance? Projectors need a specific distance from lens to screen for a given image size, and a small room can rule out a large image before you start. Third, is this a movie room or the family's everything-screen? A projector is glorious for two hours in the dark and irritating for the 6 pm news.

There is a middle path: some living rooms use a TV for daily viewing and a drop-down screen with a projector for film nights. It costs more, and it needs planning at the interiors stage, but it stops one device having to be two things.
