Room & calibration

What is room calibration and why does it matter?

Can calibration fix a bad room? No. Can it stop a decent room from ruining a good system? Yes, and that is the whole point.

Every room adds its own signature to what your speakers produce. Walls reflect, corners pile up bass at certain frequencies (room modes), and Indian living rooms with marble floors and glass fronts do this with real enthusiasm. So what your ears receive is the speaker's output plus the room's edits. The room still gets a vote, and it usually votes for boomy bass and thin dialogue.

Calibration measures that from the listening position and corrects what can be corrected: speaker distances, channel levels, crossover points, and then the frequency response at your seats. Delay and level are pure gain. Bass modes respond well to correction because they are minimum-phase problems and mostly single-seat. Above the transition region, roughly 300 Hz upwards, EQ can trim the tonal balance but it cannot fix reflections or the speaker's off-axis behaviour. That part is physics, and no menu asks nicely enough to change it.

Is the built-in auto routine (Audyssey, YPAO, Dirac, whichever your AVR shipped with) enough? It is a good starting point, not gospel. In our installations the auto run reliably gets distances right and reliably gets crossovers and speaker sizes wrong: bookshelf speakers set to Large, subs crossed at 40 Hz because the mic caught a lucky room mode. Left uncorrected, the system sounds smaller than what you paid for.

What I would do, in order: run the auto routine, then check crossovers and sizes by hand, then decide whether the remaining problems are worth measuring properly. We offer paid calibration at three levels for exactly that ladder, from corrected AVR tuning to full measurement-based room correction with before and after verification. If your room turns out to need only the first rung, we will say so. Send us the system details and a photo of the room and I will tell you which rung applies.
