Monitor Audio Silver 500 7G Overview
I found the Monitor Audio Silver 500 7G to be a great performer and its combination of punchy bass and superb levels of detail and coherence was impressive. It was also a great choice for a larger room, as it delivered all the bass that could be expected from a floorstanding speaker but with a much more refined sound. I was especially impressed with the performance of the front speakers in a 5.1.2 surround system, which produced a very wide and deep soundstage that gave a sense of space that I've not really experienced from any other floorstanding speaker. I recommend the Monitor Audio Silver 500 7G to anyone looking for a very good floorstander that's not only built very well but looks great too. Its price is reasonable too, making it an excellent choice for the discerning audiophile.
This means the Silver range is much more capable of reproducing music in a wider range of musical genres than its predecessor. It's not perfect, and there are times when it falls short of its bigger siblings in this regard, but the Silver range is still capable of delivering a very high level of performance.
Monitor Audio Silver 500 7G Features
There's no denying that Monitor Audio's Platinum loudspeaker series has always been its pinnacle range, but it's also no secret that the company's Silver series is it's most popular. It's a great place to start for audiophiles looking for the sweet spot in Monitor Audio's price and technology hierarchy.
The Silver range has evolved a lot over the years, with many improvements in its driver technology and cabinet construction. Its latest iteration has seen the brand rework all its drivers and crossovers, and the Silver 500 7G is no exception.
Its woofers now use what Monitor calls RST-II – a new generation of its trademark metal cone design, with what the manufacturer says is a "new hexagonal dimpled structure" that results in a "more rigid and smoother driver." The midrange has been reduced from a 4in the unit to a 3in one with Monitor saying the new model's directivity will improve the transition from the bass driver to the tweeter.
Inside the cabinet is a new, three-way crossover network. It uses ceramic resistors, polypropylene, and polyester capacitors along with air-core and steel-core inductors that the company claims were designed together to produce an optimized three-way system that's more capable at higher frequencies than it is at lower.
