Real buyer questionsWhat does a proper 5.1.2 living-room theatre with a laser projector actually come to?
Asked by a buyer from Bangalore.
Builds like this land in the mid-single-digit lakhs, and the projector is usually the single largest line, often rivalling the whole audio side. That is the short answer; the useful part is the anatomy.
Here is a real one we specced for a Bangalore living room. A 7.2-channel AVR. Bookshelf fronts and a centre from one series so the front stage matches tonally. Matching surrounds. An in-ceiling Atmos pair for the height channels. A 12-inch subwoofer. A 4K laser projector and a 100-inch motorised screen. Then the part everyone forgets: speaker cable runs, the long HDMI to the projector, mounts, installation and calibration.
Why the projector dominates the number: a laser light source that holds brightness for years, 4K resolution and enough lumens to survive a living room that is not fully dark all cost real money, and unlike a speaker you cannot buy half a projector. In a bright Indian living room with large windows, the light situation decides more of the projector budget than the screen size does. Blackout options or an ambient-light-rejecting screen change the arithmetic, sometimes in your favour.
Three lessons from real quotes. Budget the screen properly; a cheap screen under an expensive projector is the classic false economy, and a motorised screen has a motor that has to last. Keep several percent of the total aside for accessories and installation, because a projector across the room and Atmos speakers in the ceiling add up to far more cable than the mental picture. Treat calibration as part of the system, not an extra: an uncalibrated 5.1.2 in a marble-floored room is not the system you paid for.
Where can you save without breaking it? Speaker tier before speaker count, and a slightly smaller screen before a dimmer projector.
