Troubleshooting: sound quality

I have Atmos speakers, but my AVR display shows 'Dolby Digital' instead of Atmos. Why?

The AVR displays what it receives. "Dolby Digital" on the front panel means Atmos is not arriving at the receiver, so the leak is upstream, not in your speakers or the AVR. Nine times out of ten it is the source's output mode or the HDMI path.

The order I check in:

Confirm the title actually carries Atmos in your region and on your app. The same film can be Atmos on one platform and 5.1 on another, and streaming catalogues differ by country. Look for the Atmos badge in the app's title details, not on the box art.

Check the app's own audio setting. Several apps have a per-account or per-device audio quality toggle that defaults to stereo or standard 5.1 until you change it. Nothing downstream can restore what the app never sent.

Check the source device's audio output. It must be set to bitstream or auto, not PCM. In PCM mode the source decodes the audio itself and sends plain multichannel PCM, which strips the Atmos metadata. The AVR then reports whatever survived, and Dolby Digital is what survives.

Check the path. Older ARC cannot carry lossless Atmos (Dolby TrueHD). It can carry Atmos inside Dolby Digital Plus, which is what most streaming apps use, but only if the TV passes it through rather than downmixing. For discs and lossless, you need eARC on both TV and AVR with a suitable cable, or the source plugged straight into the AVR. Direct to the AVR is the arrangement that removes the most variables, and it is how we wire every Atmos room.

Set the AVR's input audio mode to auto. If it is forced to a specific decoder or to a stereo mode, it will not switch to Atmos even when Atmos arrives.

If you follow those five in order, the display almost always changes to Dolby Atmos somewhere around step three or four. Our streaming-side answer covers which plans and devices deliver Atmos in the first place; the two together close this out. Send us the source, TV and AVR models and how they are connected, and I will point at the exact leak.
