Troubleshooting: sound quality

Real buyer questions on troubleshooting: sound quality, answered in plain terms.

Movies sound great but music sounds ordinary on the same system. Why?

Usually settings and expectations, not hardware. Movies use every speaker in the room; music is stereo, so it lives or dies on your front pair and how you drive them.

Troubleshooting: sound quality
I hear a constant hiss (or hum) from my speakers even with nothing playing. Should I worry?

Two different things, and the fix depends on which one you have. Hiss is the electronics' noise floor. Hum is electrical, and it deserves more attention.

Troubleshooting: sound quality
I can barely hear my surround speakers. Is that normal?

Partly normal, partly fixable, and telling the two apart is the whole answer.

Troubleshooting: sound quality
My system sounds harsh and fatiguing at higher volumes. What can I do?

Three suspects, and the fix depends entirely on which one it is: the room, the pairing, or the settings. Do the free ones first.

Troubleshooting: sound quality
I have Atmos speakers, but my AVR display shows 'Dolby Digital' instead of Atmos. Why?

The AVR displays what it receives. "Dolby Digital" on the front panel means Atmos is not arriving at the receiver, so the leak is upstream, not in your speakers or the AVR. Nine times out of ten it is the source's output mode or the HDMI path.

Troubleshooting: sound quality
My bass is boomy and drowns everything. How do I fix muddy bass?

The room and the settings, almost never the subwoofer. Boomy bass is a placement and level problem in nine out of ten rooms we visit, so do not shop for a new sub yet.
