Setup & troubleshooting

Why is dialogue so hard to hear in movies, and how do I fix it?

Usually it is a settings or placement problem, not a hardware one, so nothing to buy yet.

Films are mixed with dialogue almost entirely on the centre channel. If your centre is missing, buried, or misconfigured, the voice track suffers before anything else does. Explosions rattling the windows while you reach for subtitles is the classic symptom.

The order I check in:

No centre speaker at all? That is the cause. The AVR folds dialogue into the two front speakers as a phantom centre, which works only if you sit exactly between them. Everybody else on the sofa hears a smear.

Centre stuffed inside a cabinet shelf, or sitting on the floor firing at your knees? Directivity matters most for voices, and the treble that carries consonants is the first thing to go off-axis. Get it to ear height, or at least angle it up. Your knees have never complained about mumbled dialogue.

Centre level: raise it 1 to 3 dB in the AVR menu. Small change, disproportionate result.

Speaker size and crossover: auto-calibration frequently sets a small centre to Large. It then tries to reproduce bass it cannot, and the mids where speech lives go muddy. Set it to Small with a crossover of 80 Hz, or 100 Hz for a really small one, and let the sub take the low end.

Late-night, low-volume viewing: this is what the AVR's dialogue enhancement and dynamic range compression modes exist for. Use them at 11 pm and switch them off for the weekend film.

If all five are done and it still bothers you, the room is eating clarity: bare walls, tile floor, glass. That is a calibration conversation, sometimes an acoustic treatment one, and occasionally a "the centre speaker was never good at this" one. We diagnose exactly this over WhatsApp every week; a photo of the setup and your AVR's speaker settings screen is usually enough to tell which of the six it is.
