You need eARC if your sources or apps run through the TV itself and you want the AVR to receive the best version of the sound. You do not if every source plugs directly into the AVR, which then feeds the TV. Work out which wiring you have and the answer falls out.
What it is. eARC (enhanced Audio Return Channel) lets your TV send full-quality audio back down the same HDMI cable to your AVR, including lossless Dolby Atmos and DTS:X. The older ARC carries compressed audio only, so a Dolby TrueHD or Atmos track from an app running on the TV gets squeezed down before the AVR ever hears it. The AVR then reports whatever it received, and people spend an evening wondering why the Atmos light never comes on. It came on; the TV was the bottleneck.
The two wiring philosophies. Sources into the AVR, AVR into the TV, is the traditional and still cleanest route: the AVR sees every source directly, decodes everything, and the TV only has to display. eARC matters little here, except for the TV's own apps. Sources into the TV, TV back to the AVR over eARC, is the modern living-room route, especially with a fast smart TV or a gaming console you want on the TV's best port. Here eARC decides whether you get proper surround or a compromised copy.
Both work. Which is better depends on what your sources are and how many of them live inside the TV.
The check that people skip: eARC support is listed per HDMI port, on both the TV and the AVR spec pages, and it matters which port you use. Plugging the AVR into HDMI 2 when eARC lives on HDMI 3 is the single most common reason it "does not work". A certified cable helps too; a random one from a drawer sometimes passes ARC and refuses eARC.
